The strawberry season is about one month old, and carries on until the end of September. Spanish strawberries are available in abundance in the wholesale market, but the best sellers are still English Kent grown; the Garden of England - soft, tender, sweet, ripe berries. Hmmm!
Strawberry Fields, reminds me of old times, The Beatles, Mooncake...Here's a link...
Peach, apricots and nectarines are all very reasonably priced, and are a delicious bargain for any day of the week. Then there are plump well-filled Spanish watermelons, ideal for that calorie-free snack on a hot day, and fine sweet yellow honeydew melons from the same place.
C'mon Girls, all our produce is fresh in every day and oozing juice, moist and ready-to-eat, unlike those unripe tasteless dry things that are picked too early and sit for ages on supermarket shelves, looking sad under a bit of plastic wrapping.
Champagne at Lemonade Prices is my cry, and that's the value you get from us!
Talking of value, just look at the varieties of tomatoes there are available - it's fantastic! We sell sweet little Cherry toms, nice plump Plum toms, huge breakfast Beefsteak toms, high-quality Toms-on-the-Vine, etc. There's no end to them, I must be the Tomato King on Northampton Market, there's so much variety. Italian, Spanish, English; you name it, we've got it here and now. If you like it firm, you can have it firm; if you like it ripe, you can have it ripe. We cater for all tastes, and aim to satisfy your every need.
Sell out or Stop out! Is another market cry you'll hear, meaning that if we don't sell out at these prices, we'll stop out here until we do.
On the vegetable front we have new season Primo cabbages, Jersey new potatoes at 2 lbs for a £1, Cornish new for 3 lbs a £1, and Yorkshire peas for £1.20 a lb. The Indian community just love my Yorkshire peas, they'll queue up patiently for them if there's a rush on, and go home weighed down with bags of them. Delicious peas, every one a winner!
And now for my new shout: 'Don't Panic if it's not Organic!' Good eh? Thought that one up myself. Sometimes it's difficult to get all the organic stuff we'd like, but there it is, the other stuff tastes just as good, especially if you're hungry. I do like to sell organic, though; makes me feel better, just like the customers who buy it.
Come on down to the Market, it's at it's most colourful this time of year. Just look at that fantastic display of fruity goodies from all over the World! Wear what you like girls, we don't mind, so long as you don't mind being called Darlin'...
