But I feel the fire has gone out of my belly now, for politics. What with Blair and his disastrous period in office, followed by Brown, and then we had the equally-disastrous Lib-Dems locally, I feel I've about had enough of them all.
I suppose if I'd have wanted to get on politically I should have joined one of the three main parties, but none of them was ever sufficiently attractive to me. You have to swallow so much party guff, whoever you join. It's the quickest way into politics, but you have to forget some of your principals, and toe the party line, and that's not me.
As a mate of mine says: 'I wouldn't join any political party that would have me as a member!'
I honestly think that some of these stuck-up politicians like Cameron and Osborne don't live in the real world; they need to come and meet people like me, for a down-to-earth chat and a cup of tea.
At least a few politicians, like Michael Ellis MP, actually do this, and put in some real work as well. I greatly enjoyed Michael's day on my market stalls. Working away he was, in the pouring rain at times, and never a grumble. I enjoyed his company, and he has a real knowledge of Northampton, and was able to discuss with me many memories of the past in our knocked-about town. It's good to see a politician who knows his local history, and really cares about the present day Northampton. My old mate Kevin Storey made an amusing film of Michael's day on the market, called 'MP At Work', and you can take a look at it here: MP At Work.
Cucumbers...
Back to Fruit & Veg., the Germans are still unpopular internationally in the trade, and some Spanish growers have vowed never to send them a cucumber again. An incredible amount of money was lost by growers over that German scare, and some never recovered and had to go out of business. Even over here, hundreds of miles away from the scare, you couldn't sell a cucumber for love nor money, and a lot of stock went for garbage until we stopped buying in.
High Time?
Now I'm out of politics, it's time I asked something that I've not said much about in the past:
May I ask, is it 'high' time Marijuana was legalised? Don't get me wrong, I don't like the smell of the stuff either; back in the 60's and 70's it used to smell a lot better than it does now, from what I remember. But half the young folks seem to wander about smoking it nowadays, and if it was legalised there would be no 'factories' growing the stuff, and no dealers dealing it. The government would even be able to tax it, like cigarette smoking. There's a thought!
Don't forget, take a look at 'MP At Work'.
