But it also knows that it is in very deep trouble and that Gordon Brown does not seem capable of staging a political recovery.
The constant fight of our Prime Minister for his political life and the continuing saga of MPs expenses is doing our proud nation no good. Gordon Brown can now best serve the New Labour Party by stepping down as party leader and so allow the party to find a new leader to take us into the next General Election. I will be very surprised if in a year's time Gordon Brown is still our Prime Minister.
I look forward to a General Election next year. Northampton North or South? I'm undecided at present. I live in the South and the market is in the South, but it might be more fun in the North where the Lib-Dems have more of a chance and are pushing Andrew Simpson and don't want me to compete. We will all have to consider carefully how we cast our votes, particularly the 11,000 voters who signed the market petition and then had it completely ignored by the Liberal Democrats. Not many of those 11,000 will be voting for Simpson, I think.
I don't want to see a Conservative government, but may I end by saying 'The New Labour Party deserves its fate. But the people it was elected to represent do not.'
