Even Gordon Brown does not command as much respect as he had when he came to power. I can forgive Gordon Brown some things but not the appointment of Alan Sugar. Does Brown really see Sir Sugar as the new spirit of enterprise? I see him as a bullying little prat.
Overall the Tories have not changed much from the mentality they had when they were trounced in 1997. David Cameron has done a brilliant spin job so far, but doesn't really have a credible economic policy; how will they deal with Britain's debt mountain, for example? The Tories are not yet ready for government and a landslide victory would not be in the interests of the nation.
I don't expect the Lib-Dems to do much better than expected, especially around Northampton, where some of their number have become notorious for not listening and not caring about what local people have to say. This sort of arrogant attitude is 'sticky' in politics, and when a party has a few people at the top like this it isn't long before the rest, rightly or wrongly, get tarred with the same brush. So personally I don't think the Lib-Dems have got much chance around here in a General election.
So far as Labour goes, it may seem unfair that Labour has had to suffer more than other parties in the expenses fallout, but with greater representation comes greater responsibility, and greater scrutiny. All politicians eventually fall upon their own swords - or should that be expense accounts? We are unlikely to get an early general election while Gordon Brown remains our Prime Minister; he will cling tenaciously to power until well into next year, hoping that improvements to the economy will give him a platform for an election. Many Labour MPs including our local Sally Keeble are facing defeat, and will try to hang on to their salaries for another year.
Personally I see the current political situation as rather sad. I love my country and I will always stick up for my country, but I don't like what is happening in my country. I can only ask that we remember the freedom and the rights we all enjoy and increasingly take for granted; that we remember the untold numbers of soldiers who have died in the past for those rights, and are still dying today, and when the time comes go out and vote next time.
As I mentioned above, respect is an important word to me. If politicians have no respect for the people of this country, and the bankers likewise have no respect, how can they expect people generally and especially kids to have respect for them?
