One lady cheered me up no end: 'You've got the whole of Northampton behind you, Fitzy!' She said. Many people had quite a bit to say about the local Lib-Dems, none of it good, so I guess the Lib-Dem canvassers are in for a roasting on the doorstep as they make their way around. I don't think Northampton will make the mistake of voting them in ever again.
I've started putting up election signs around my stalls and in the local environment, and I shall be bringing up the big guns with the campaigning barrow over the next few days. (Some have a campaigning bus, but here on the market a campaigning barrow comes into its own!). I shall be handing out leaflets too, so people can read what I'm all about, and I shall be discussing the current situation with anyone who wants to chat when they come by my stall. I always aim to be easily accessible, anyone can approach me about anything, and I don't hide behind spin doctors and lies. You can follow my progress at Twitter:
http://twitter.com/Fruity_FitzyI must admit I'm getting a bit of a buzz from all this political activity and we've hardly started yet. Already I have three Taxis going around town with my adverts on the back, and next week there'll be a man up Abington Street with a board doing the same. There's a press photo shoot next Friday up at my stalls outside the Grosvenor Centre, and only today Brian Binley and Michael Ellis came by to have a friendly discussion.
With all this political activity going on there's a good opportunity to film my corner of the market for someone who wants to record this historical local election from ground zero, and maybe interview the people of Northampton while they are at it, to get honest straight-forward local views on local politics.
There's more than just the election to think about here on the market, because as I've told you in an earlier blog, the Lib-Dems have plans to take down our strong steel market stalls and substitute seaside gazebos, and the market is well miffed about it. As if this wasn't bad enough, they also want to take away our boards and trestles; the very things we use to display our gear, the most essential bits of kit on the market. You wonder what variety of sawdust the Lib-Dems carry inside their heads. It's either that or one or more of the conspiracy theories are true, and they want to drive us traders off the market, and use it for a car park or a bus park, or future development.
I hear there's a Market Action Group started up recently; nothing directly to do with me of course, but I wish them the best of luck. They plan to destroy Lib-Dem hopeful Andrew Simpson's chances in the North, by showing his close association with the rest of the Lib-Dems who are bent on destroying the traditional market, closing the public toilets, and drastically cutting public services here in Northampton.
What a shower of sugar the Lib-Dems have turned out to be! They refused to listen to market traders and 11,000 market shoppers who signed our Petition, and arrogantly went ahead with their plans to downsize the market. They'll be out next year, come the local elections, and it will be 'good riddance to bad rubbish!' I shall be after Church's seat again, and will probably take it this time. If I'm not an MP by then, of course!
