I would also like to thank all those who have been following my progress on radio and television, and through my writings on Twitter, and this blog. Thanks too, to all those people in far-off countries who have watched this blog, particularly in the States, where I seem to have quite a following, and thank you all for the many messages of support received. I didn't do as well as I'd hoped, but then, not many did. As a mate said: "Keep calm and carry on". Good advice. I think the experience taught me that for all the talk of voting Independent, at general elections people vote for parties, not individuals, when they are actually faced with the ballot paper.
So what now, after the election? Will we have another general election in six months time? If we do, I won't be taking part, as I shall be getting ready for our local elections next May. I would just like to let those Liberal Democrats on Northampton council know that I'm not going away, I shall be here to continue the fight for Northampton Market and Northampton Town Centre. They have about one year's government funding money left to waste on various events and arty-farty artifacts, then it will be gone. When it's gone, it's gone for good. Nothing left to put on events, nothing left to pay for events. And in a recession can you see companies competing with each other to pay to use the bottom of Northampton Market Square as an exhibition area? Me neither.
Along with this last year of squandered government funding will go the last year of the Lib-Dems in power in Northampton; the Lib-Dem turkeys will be marching downhill to their own Christmas which awaits them in the local elections next May. Having seen what the Lib-Dems have done in Northampton, most local people were smart enough not to vote them into Westminster. You should have seen these Lib-Dems just before the Election; coming down to our market and telling me that Simpson was a clear winner to get in Northampton North, and that Clegg had an excellent chance of winning nationally. Puffed up like turkeys they were, strutting about inside their own collective fantasy, carried away by their own supposed importance. When they heard the count on election night, they were shattered men, dazed by the grim reality of Simpson coming third. I could have bloody cheered!
Not that I have anything against the Liberal Democrat party or some of its principles. It's just that locally, the Lib-Dems have been a party ruined by bad leaders, again and again. Leaders who have taken no notice of public opinion; leaders who deliberately ignored common-sense advice freely given; leaders so bloated with the sense of their own self-importance that they arrogantly considered themselves above all advice. Now they have some of their reward, and they will get the rest in May next year if they continue as they have in the past. They have a couple of words to learn the meaning of; respect and humility. They need to have respect for the people who elected them, the people of Northampton. And they need to have the humility to recognise that they are public servants, and that if they fail to fulfill this function they can easily be removed from office in the next local elections.
Well, I'm taking a couple of days off now, courtesy of my staff, who rang to say: 'Take a day or two off to recover from the election, Fitzy'. Nice guys, eh? That's the sort of staff I like.
But remember you can still continue to follow my activities on this blog page, and on my Twitter account at: http://twitter.com/Fruity_Fitzy
