The sad news that the Chronicle and Echo is closing as a daily newspaper will mean a big blow to local democracy. The number of times a local councillor, or council official, or even a local business, has had to come forward to explain or apologise after something has been raised in the Chronicle, is beyond counting.

The prospect of the St Crispin Fair returning to our Town Centre does not appeal to me, as it will not appeal to hundreds of shopkeepers, business proprietors, store managers, market stall holders and owners of other town centre businesses who found themselves down on takings when the fair came to town in the past.

Yes, it's the new miniature bus station I'm writing about, a serious cause for ongoing concern. I think we should call for a careful and critical review of this whole question of replacing the bus station, before it is too late.

I don't know how you feel but I'm very angry about things and have been for about five or six years, what with the Iraq war, Afghanistan, the Banks Fiasco, MPs Expenses, and our own Northampton Market being kicked about by the Liberal-Democrats.

It was good to read the results of Mary Portas' retail report commissioned by the government the other day. It only took her about six months to come up with some obvious answers, so she is pretty perceptive.

Politics, that is. I feel it is high time I retired from taking part in politics; I have done two local elections, two general elections, and a bye-election, and the publicity was good for my business, and for Northampton Market.

As some of you may already know, Michael Ellis, MP for Northampton North, has volunteered to get in some real-life work experience working on my market stalls this Thursday, 18th August. I'd like you to give him a big hand for volunteering.

There's been a lot of correspondence in the local papers concerning the turning out of half of Northampton's lights. We have even had county councillors likening it to standards before the 2nd World War, when the street lighting was fairly sparse even in towns, and almost non-existent in rural areas. The comparison is completely false.

Well, this is the time of year I really love! The succulent soft-fruit season has just started up, with delicious French, Italian, and Spanish cherries.

Well, I didn't get to be voted in as a Councillor, but I would like to thank all those good people in Kingsley Ward who voted for me at the local elections on May 5th. I much appreciate the support I got from many voters in the ward, with special thanks to those well-wishers who called by my stalls before the elections to have a chat.

Well, time's cracking on towards May 5th, and the number of people telling me that they're going to vote for me in Kingsley Ward is very gratifying.

With the elections looming in early May, the Liberal Democrats are going to have great difficulty in hanging on to many of their Northampton Borough Council seats.
